Question: How is the Communication Server application working?
Answer: This application is a component of the Optimall system that runs under Windows and enables the TCP/IP connection between the component running on the Palm and the backoffice component running on a PC computer (Optimall PC)
Here are a few scenarios of these components working together:

First Scenario:

  • The customer has no Internet provider. The CommunicationServer runs at a real Internet provider, under Windows, and has a static IP address assigned.
  • The customer purchases a GPRS-enabled phone whereby (s)he establishes a dial-up connection to be used by OptimallPC. A connection between OptimallPC and the CommunicationServer is thus created.
  • OptimallPDA establishes a direct OptimallPDA-CommunicationServer connection through GPRS (because the CommunicationServer is running on a real IP address). An OptimallPDA-CS-OptimallPC connection is thus established which allows for data to be transmitted both ways.

Second Scenario:

  • The customer has an Internet provider but no real (static) IP address.
  • The CommunicationServer works the same way as described at point 1, except for the fact that the client no longer has to purchase a gprs-enabled phone.

Third Scenario
:
  • The customer has an Internet provider and a real (static) IP address.
  • The connection works the same way as in second scenario, except for the fact that the CommunicationServer will run on the client's computer.

Fourth Scenario
:
  • The client has the Virtual Private Network (VPN) protocol
  • The connection works as in the third scenario.
